ISO/CD PAS 24019 Simultaneous interpreting delivery platforms
The use of simultaneous interpreting platforms is a relatively new field of activity for interpreters that will be increasingly implemented from 2020 – especially in hybrid or purely digital event formats.
ISO 24019 aims to fix parameters and conditions for the use of these services in environments where interpreters are also outside the meeting room.
Specifically, this ISO is intended to provide information on basic requirements and recommendations for video conferencing platforms.
Technical equipment and facilities for simultaneous interpretation are also included in the documents ISO 2603, ISO 4043, ISO 20108 and ISO 20109 described.
Additional specific provisions apply to certain settings and specializations, such as multilingual conference interpreting on video platforms. This document (ISO PAS) was developed in advance as a publicly available specification before a full international standard for simultaneous interpretation platforms was developed.
It is likely that the contents of this document will form the basis for a full ISO standard in due course.
Comment from PCS
This draft is about the techniques for Distance Interpreting (DI) and Remote Interpreting (RSI). The definitions are discussed and the subtle difference within this environment. DI has been practiced for a long time, but there are no normative definitions of what should or can be used with what quality and how.
Or take the RI, which has also been used in the EU (e.g. in Norway and England) for more than 15 years. Here, too, the method applied there is often used. consecutive Video interpreting with simultaneous interpreting. It is precisely for these reasons that RSI is to be defined once again in more detail in this standard.
Last but not least, the RSI should also be raised to a standardization platform through these measures of the subordinate fields DI and RI, so that on the one hand it is clear that the fields are different, and so that the technologies are not confused or thrown together. Since the field here has a very wide scope, i.e. is quasi completely cross-standard, all the threads of the preliminary work are now ultimately running here with the interpreting associations of AIIC (here, among others, Klaus Ziegler), VKD/BDÜ, PCS as technical service provider, and all other panel members as well as the other member states of this ISO committee together.
