DIN 8578:2021 - Consecutive distance interpreting - Requirements and recommendations (draft)

This DIN is published in 2021 in a draft and deals with bilingual and multilingual communication from a distance (remote).

Here are the rough contents:

  • Communicative situations that are essentially bilingual (i.e., when interpreters are needed for a language pair) or multilingual/multilingual situations should be addressed and standardized.
  • Focus on bilingual communication
  • Mention monolingual interpreting (accessibility); but is included in bilingual interpreting?
  • Note that the standard refers primarily to spoken language because consecutive distance interpreting is the primary focus and sign language interpreting falls under simultaneous interpreting.
  • Standardization of the quality of the transmission to enable and support the work of the interpreters
  • Focus on "consecutive", but to what extent does simultaneous/whispered interpretation need to be included in this standard (as is common in court, for example)?

Comment from PCS

This standard is mainly concerned with the service of consecutive interpreting from a distance (i.e. connected). However, to ensure that the service can be offered adequately in this case, the minimum technical requirements for conference and transmission technology as well as workplace design, data protection, confidentiality, etc. are also implemented.

This DIN (as well as the ISO mentioned in this dictionary) is available at the Beuth Publishing House to obtain.
