Interpreting booths and desks

PCS GmbH is Audipack authorized dealer

Interpreting booths are the workplace for simultaneous interpreters. In the heavily soundproofed interpreting booths, interpreters can work in peace and quiet without disturbing conference guests or being distracted by outside noise. Interpreters usually work as a team, so booths can accommodate at least two people. The attached ventilation ensures sufficient fresh air. In our assortment you will find booths for 2, 3 and 4 people. The size can also be flexibly changed according to requirements.

Fields of application of interpreter booths

Interpreter booths are used at international conferences, meetings or congresses. They can be used on a mobile basis or are a fixed component of conference floors in ministries, universities, company headquarters or other conference venues.

The 9700 interpreter booth is almost identical in construction to the 9600 described above, only the individual parts differ in dimensions. The main panels are not arranged vertically but horizontally, so that the booth can be disassembled into smaller individual parts. This allows the cabin to be packed in a more space-saving manner.

The Silent 6300 model is the right choice for particularly high sound insulation requirements. This interpreter booth has a significantly thicker wall, additionally insulated floor elements and, on request, double glazing. As a result, it clearly exceeds the standards and specifications from ISO 4043 and also easily achieves the attenuation values of DIN 56924, Part 2. Due to the high sound insulation, the booth also has a higher weight. While the 9600 and 9700 models weigh around 210 kg, the 6300 already weighs around 340 kg. For very frequent assembly and disassembly, we therefore recommend the 9600 or 9700 models.

Interpreter desks

The basic equipment of an interpreter's booth includes an interpreter's console. At the console, the interpreter selects the channel of the language into which he is currently translating. A throat-clearing button allows him to briefly interrupt the transmission. A tone control allows the signal heard to be adjusted according to the interpreter's wishes.

View from an interpreter booth

Interpreters can influence whether they want to hear the original sound from the conference room or a relay channel, i.e. the interpreted sound from an adjacent booth. Relay operation should be briefly explained here: At conferences and congresses, many language combinations can occur simultaneously. At the same time, an interpreter does not necessarily master all the languages required. For example, the conference interpreters in a German booth working from English into German do not have to interpret from Japanese as well. As soon as a Japanese speaker takes the floor, the interpreters who do not know the language switch to the "Japanese interpreter booth" and listen to their colleague there translating into English, for example. The interpreters in the "German booth" then in turn translate from English into German.

A headset is connected to the interpreter's desk. The constant speaking distance from the mouth to the boom microphone means that you can always be understood very well, even when moving. The headset must also be lightweight so that it is easy to wear throughout the assignment.

Headsets are less common outside Germany, where people tend to work with stationary table microphones and simple headphones. At first glance, this may seem more comfortable because headphones weigh less than headsets, but depending on the position and agility of the interpreters, the distance between them and the microphone changes constantly, which is perceived as an unpleasant level fluctuation by the participants in the room. If this variant is nevertheless desired, appropriate control components should be planned for a fixed installation.

We offer interpreter consoles from Bosch and Beyerdynamic.

Beyerdynamic SIS 1202 interpreter console

In a soundproof booth, the interpreter's console is used as the most important working tool of the simultaneous translators. The control panel of the SIS 1202 is designed by Beyerdynamic as a dual console for the use of two interpreters alternately for seamless translation operation. All relevant settings for the operation (e.g. monitoring/relay channels as well as output channels directly or in A/B mode) can be made not only by a technician at the control panel but also by the interpreters themselves at the respective consoles, before and even during the interpreting assignment. At the interpreter console, the original language of the speaker is listened to and simultaneously translated, either via headphones and microphone or via the DT 394.SIS intercom combination. In addition, the freely selectable relay channel on the console can be used to access the preset translation of another interpreter at the push of a button without audio dropouts (cabin pivot) if the speaker's original language is not mastered. Of course, it is possible to switch back to the original language just as quickly. In addition to selectable speech and relay channels, the large 4-line display can also visualize information from the patented EarPatron® hearing protection function in real time. Useful data that can be individually programmed via the control center, such as the name of the current speaker or the time, are also displayed. A red on-air signal, visible from afar, indicates that the interpreter console is in active translation mode. A service button allows the interpreter to alert a service technician, if necessary, with a message on the control panel touch screen. The translator receives a visual acknowledgement from the technician. An individual sound control, which can be adjusted to the interpreter's personal needs, is present through volume, treble and bass settings. The mute function (throat button) can be used to interrupt audio transmission to the system for the duration of the operation.
