Simultaneous system
The interpreting equipment includes the technical components in the interpreting technology that are needed to turn a monolingual event into a multilingual one. These are mainly: interpreter console, control center, Infrared system, alternatively Inductive system or the Delegate facility.
The interpreter desk in the Interpreter booth is used by the interpreter to select the channels into which he speaks and which he wants to hear. He wears a listening-speaking set (similar to that of a pilot) or works with a table microphone and headphones. The interpreter's console is connected to a control center via a special cable or bus system. This unit manages – nowadays mostly microprocessor-controlled – the input and output channels of the interpreting equipment.
The original sound is fed in from the auditorium, a film projection device or other sources. The individual interpreter channels are available as output signals, which are then passed on to connected headphones or to an infrared interpreting system or inductive system.
