What is an interpretation hub?

In a room called the interpreting hub, there are lots of interpreting booths and monitors in front of these booths. You can also see a technical control room with various mixing consoles and laptops, where a technician sits and prepares the technical aspects of an upcoming conference.

Interpreting hub, mobile and stationary

An interpreting hub (sometimes also interpreting studio, very rarely RSI studio) is an arrangement of interpreting booths / workstations for conference interpreters in a specially prepared room. They are connected to conferences from these booths, regardless of whether they are face-to-face, hybrid or purely digital events.

Example: A conference is taking place in a hotel in Hamburg. This event is multilingual, so the participants are reliant on professional interpreting.

The interpreters actually come from Berlin. Instead of bringing them to Hamburg, the organizers are renting a Berlin hub from which the interpreters will be connected remotely. As usual, participants in Hamburg can listen to the desired language on site using headphones.

This saves travel costs, travel time and overnight stays for the interpreters.

For video conferences in MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting, etc., which take place purely digitally or hybrid (i.e. as a mixed form with presence and digitally connected participants), interpreters are added according to the same principle if required.

Interpreting hubs usually offer internet redundancy with multiple access points, an uninterruptible power supply, statutory data protection (GDPR), and in the case of PCS even their own protected German servers, landing pages, technical moderation and corresponding support.

Conclusion: Interpreting hubs support both face-to-face events and the implementation of multilingual online meetings as virtual events.

A hub is originally a hub (in this case a bicycle hub) and is now translated as a turntable or center. In network technology, a hub is a device that connects network nodes in a star shape.
